Spring is an explosion of life in the North! Discovering the birds\, wildflowers\, insects and more of this dynamic and rich northern landscape is the focus of this festival. Participation in the festival is open to anyone interested in hands-on learning and curious about the dynamics of the northern landscape. \n \nThis year\, we turn our attention to the aquatic landscapes of the north\, with evening presentations on beavers and their impacts on the boreal forest and the Lake Superior fishery. We are pleased to welcome many returning instructors and favorite offerings\, and happy to introduce new instructor Dr. Cynthia Lane\, offering a multi-day course in basic botany. \nPublic Presentations Event Details\nFriday\, June 2\, 7pm: Beaver Crafted Wetlands: Amphibian and Invertebrate Communities in the Boreal Forest with Talon Stammen\nCost: Free | Venue: Blue Building \nIt’s no secret that the humble beaver is a builder by trade\, and can have a serious impact on the northern landscape (even in downtown Grand Marais!). Beavers are considered both ecosystem engineers and keystone species because their dam building activities affect the hydrologic conditions and vegetation of wetlands\, providing important habitat for many wildlife species. Talon Stammen\, long time student of craft at North House\, is completing his PhD research on the impacts of beavers on amphibian and invertebrate species in Voyageurs National Park. Talon will share his findings and his explorations of the Kabetogama Peninsula over a four year period. \nSaturday\, June 3\, 7pm | A History of Fish\, Fishing\, and Fisheries Management in the Minnesota Waters of Lake Superior\nCost: Free | Venue: Blue Building \nThe history of fish\, fishing\, and fisheries management in Lake Superior is complex and has been impacted through time by the absence of fishery regulations\, changes to habitat\, invasive species\, and climate change. When we published the first catalog of 12 courses (including Inuit kayak building\, Scandinavian bowl carving\, and canoe paddle making)\, North House didn’t yet have a home — or even a classroom. However\, two old forest service buildings on the harbor serendipitously became available\, and North House settled in and began building a campus. DESCRIPTION:BOOK NOWCALL NOW\n2023 Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Race & Tour\n2023 Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Race & Tour\nWinter fun awaits you at the annual Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Races on February 18\, 2023 at Pincushion Mountain Trails\, about 2 miles up the Gunflint Trail overlooking Grand Marais. Registration is now open at pincushiontrails.org. Online registration is preferred making it easier for the race volunteers\, but Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Races participants can register on the morning of the races between 8:00 and 9:00. The 10km classic\, 10km freestyle\, and 25km classic races and 10km tour begin at 10:00. There is also a woodie-ski division included. Free hats are available to the first 70 participants registered for the 10km and 25km races/tour. \nThey’ve been maintained as ski\, running\, and bike trails for about 30 years by a volunteer organization called the North Superior Ski and Run Club (NSSR). \nFollowing the Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Races we’ll have bonfires\, prizes and refreshments. Starting on 1:30 pm there are kid races (1/2km\, 1.5km and 3km). The fun continues with 3km and 7km Skijoring races at 2:30. NSSRC has created and maintained the Pincushion Mountain Trail System in conjunction with the US Forest Service and Cook County. All work completed on this fine trail system was either volunteer or paid for from club proceeds. To this day\, club members continue to volunteer their time and money to maintain and improve this tremendous trail facility. \nNSSRC owns and maintains a Pisten Bully trail groomer\, snowmobile ski trail grooming equipment\, maintenance garage and warming chalet\, as well as a waxing building at the Pincushion Trailhead. In addition to grooming the trails for winter ski use\, the club mows and maintains the trails for summer use. They also support Junior Ski Racing\, a Youth Ski League for ages 13 and under\, Cook County High Nordic Skiing\, Cross Country Running\, and Track teams\, as well as numerous events at Pincushion. \nNSSRC is the host of the Sawtooth International Ski Races and the Fisherman’s Picnic Trail Run/Walk held annually on the Pincushion Trail System. DESCRIPTION:Sawtooth Mountain Challenge\nEveryone is welcome at the annual Sawtooth Mountain Challenge on October 12\, 2019 at the Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais\, Minnesota. Hosted every fall at Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais\, the Sawtooth Mountain Challenge is the North Shore’s first mountain bike race. It has been run for over 25 years and has taken different shapes\, but it now functions as the main fundraiser for SCA’s trail maintenance fund.
