The Lions Club BIG raffle includes a grand prize of $10\,000 and lots of other great prizes for $5.00 a ticket. Get your collectible button\, it’s your pass to participate in events all weekend long. \nThe annual Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic turns this small North Shore community into a bustling\, fun-filled scene of families and folks of all ages. It’s both a celebration and observance of the past and the present – a coming together of the ‘locals’ who never forget how unique their North Shore hometown is. It’s also an event that draws visitors from all over back to Grand Marais each year to enjoy the event and town\, and the natural surrounding beauty. Bring an appetite too. The very popular fish burgers that are on sale during the Picnic even have a song written about them: “They’re all red ready and they’re all red hot. Spring is an explosion of life in the North! Discovering the birds\, wildflowers\, insects and more of this dynamic and rich northern landscape is the focus of this festival. Participation in the festival is open to anyone interested in hands-on learning and curious about the dynamics of the northern landscape. \n \nThis year\, we turn our attention to the aquatic landscapes of the north\, with evening presentations on beavers and their impacts on the boreal forest and the Lake Superior fishery. We are pleased to welcome many returning instructors and favorite offerings\, and happy to introduce new instructor Dr. Cynthia Lane\, offering a multi-day course in basic botany. \nPublic Presentations Event Details\nFriday\, June 2\, 7pm: Beaver Crafted Wetlands: Amphibian and Invertebrate Communities in the Boreal Forest with Talon Stammen\nCost: Free | Venue: Blue Building \nIt’s no secret that the humble beaver is a builder by trade\, and can have a serious impact on the northern landscape (even in downtown Grand Marais!). Beavers are considered both ecosystem engineers and keystone species because their dam building activities affect the hydrologic conditions and vegetation of wetlands\, providing important habitat for many wildlife species. Talon Stammen\, long time student of craft at North House\, is completing his PhD research on the impacts of beavers on amphibian and invertebrate species in Voyageurs National Park. Online registration is preferred making it easier for the race volunteers\, but Pincushion Winter Festival Ski Races participants can register on the morning of the races between 8:00 and 9:00. The 10km classic\, 10km freestyle\, and 25km classic races and 10km tour begin at 10:00. There is also a woodie-ski division included. All rides begin at 5:30 PM. Rides will be held every Tuesday in July\, August\, and September. \nAll July rides are singletrack mountain bike trails and require a mountain bike and intermediate skills. \nBring water\, spare tube\, pump\, tools\, etc. these are wilderness rides and a long hike back to your vehicle\, be prepared. \nBYOB and snacks for after the ride. \nFor more information: contact Tim Kennedy at 218-370-0955 or tkennedy@boreal.org \n \nAbout the Superior Cycling Association\nIn 2010\, the Superior Cycling Association was founded to grow mountain and road biking opportunities in Cook County. DESCRIPTION:Sawtooth Mountain Challenge\nEveryone is welcome at the annual Sawtooth Mountain Challenge on October 12\, 2019 at the Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais\, Minnesota. Hosted every fall at Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais\, the Sawtooth Mountain Challenge is the North Shore’s first mountain bike race. It has been run for over 25 years and has taken different shapes\, but it now functions as the main fundraiser for SCA’s trail maintenance fund.
