North Shore Oberg Mountain Hike

North Shore Oberg Mountain Hike

You will find the Oberg Mountain trail beautiful year round, but it’s especially gorgeous in the fall, when the surrounding forest is aglow with shades of gold, orange and red. There is no shortage of spectacular views on this 2.3-mile loop, including 360s of the Lake Superior North Shore, surrouding forest, and Oberg Lake. Generally considered a moderately challenging hike, allow 1-1/2 hours to complete. This is a very popular hiking trail, so you are likely encounter others. Dogs are welcome, but be sure to keep them on a leash. There are steep cliffs at the top so use caution with small children. Listen for black throated blue warblers in the spring, and look for beaver activity in Oberg Lake. The maples here are a distinct ecosystem, and harbor a variety of plants not common on the rest of the forest. This trail is a spur trail off of the Superior Hiking Trail.

Great trip. We arrived at approximately 10:30 am and made our way towards the entrance of the trail. The trail was moderate in nature and steep in certain areas. The trail was a big loop that brought us back to the parking lot when we completed it. There were multiple scenic overlooks that provided beautiful views of the trees and water below us. I recommend spending 1.5 hours here if you truly want to see everything. North Dakota TripAdvisor Review

Getting to the trailhead: The trailhead for the Honeymoon Bluff trail is just off of Co 66 (Clearwater Rd) which is 30 miles up the Gunflint Trail. From Grand Marais, turn north on the Gunflint Trail (Co Rd 12) and go about 27 miles until you reach Co 66. Turn right and continue for 3.25 miles to reach the small parking lot off the left side of the road. The parking lot is right after you go past the turn off for the Flour Lake Campground.

The hike: The hike is a very short loop, but is relatively steep for the first half. There is a stairway climb for the first part of the hike until you reach the T of the loop. Continue right until you reach the overlook area. There are a number of great locations along this overlook to capture some nice sunset shots (all facing west)! The overlook provides spectacular views of two lakes surrounded by boreal forest.

100% Worth the Drive!

We were on the fence about going, because our GPS said it was a 52 minute drive. The drive only took us about 40, and was worth every second! The hike was incredibly easy, just a short flight of stairs and a very small and flat loop with an incredible overlook. I’ve been on ‘off the beaten path’ hiking trails before that were near impossible to find, so I was incredibly relieved that this was actually very easy to locate; it has a big sign and everything. Just be prepared for about 15 minutes of narrow gravel road driving! Shelby C, Minneapolis TripAdvisor Review

Pincushion Mountain Trail to Grand Marais
Pincushion Mountain provides a spectacular view down the mountain to the town of Grand Marias and its harbor and lighthouse. Picnic tables and hiking trails make this a great stop for lunch on the way up the Gunflint Trail. Mountain Biking: There are about 6 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails starting from the trailhead at Pincushion. Hikers may be found on these trails, so be watchful for them. The trail intersects the Pincushion XC ski trail system. In dry conditions, some ski trails may be used by bikes, but they are not designed for bicycles. If you see that the ski trail surface is too soft and you might cause erosion, please use only the bike trails. Also, be aware that the mountain bike trail maps do not show the entire ski trail system, and it is very easy to lose your way on the ski trails.

The Pincushion Mountain Singletrack Mountain Bike Trails begin from this trailhead.
Pincushion Mountain Trail System Webpage • 3.1 miles from Superior Inn Grand Marais

Day Hiking: Hikers at Pincushion may use either the XC ski trails or mountain bike trails. If you are hiking the bike trails, keep alert for cyclists and yield the trail to them when you meet. If you are using the XC ski trail system, note that it is complex and it is easy to turned around.

Superior National Forest Scenic Byway
The Superior National Forest Scenic Byway, designated as Forest Highway 11, runs from the taconite town of Silver Bay to the logging town of Aurora. There are long stretches of unbroken forest along this 54 mile road, giving the driver a good sense of being away from it all. Several trails and campgrounds are on or near the route for perfect resting areas.

Route Description
The byway begins in Gilbert, at the intersection of State Highway 37 and Sparta Road. The route follows Highway 37 to State Highway 135, continuing eastward along the latter through Biwabik and then to Aurora, where it leaves Highway 135 and follows St. Louis County Road 100 to the center of town. From there it turns south until the city border, and then resumes its eastward travel along County Road 110 to Hoyt Lakes. From Hoyt Lakes the road gradually arcs southward. This portion is also called Skibo Lookout Road, after the Skibo Vista Scenic Overlook, which overlooks the Laurentian Divide. County Road 110 ends at its junction with County Road 16 (Town Line Road), and the byway route again continues east, through the unincorporated towns of Fairbanks and Basset. Crossing the St. Louis-Lake county line, the roadway becomes Lake County Road 15 and passes through Toimi. This is the longest portion of the route, traveling 23 miles to Lax Lake Road, where it turns south along County Road 4 for approximately 2 miles. It then travels east along County Road 5 into Silver Bay, ending at Highway 61 near the North Shore.

We LOVED the town of Grand Marais. This hotel was the perfect location to walk anywhere in the town. It was so convenient to just walk to restaurants, shopping and the beach. The view from the room was fantastic and unexpected. The room had a little patio that overlooked the lake. It was very clean and had a nice tile shower with a double shower head. So much nicer than what I expected. They also had a very nice fitness room, which I didn’t use since the weather was great and we got lots of exercise outdoors. But this would be great in the winter or inclement weather. There was a free breakfast which was nice. They kept it clean and well maintained, which I noticed and appreciated. Judge Magney State Park & Devil’s Kettle Waterfall

In 1957, a 940-acre section of forest along the Brule River was set aside as Brule River State Park. The park became Judge C. R. Magney State Park in 1963 when the Minnesota legislature selected this park as a memorial to the late Judge Magney, a lawyer, mayor, justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and a strong proponent of Minnesota State Parks, especially those along the North Shore. Judge Magney was instrumental in establishing 11 state parks and waysides along Lake Superior.

Hours: Memorial Day – Labor Day: Daily, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Fall, Winter & Spring: Please contact Cascade River State Park at 218-387-6000

The scenic Brule River races through the park, forming whitewater rapids and waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. Along the lower stretches of the river are a series of spectacular waterfalls. Birdwatchers will find a bonanza of warblers during the nesting months of May, June, and July. Early fall is a good time to observe migrating hawks as they congregate along the shore of Lake Superior. Large white spruce grace the campground and other upland areas. The forested areas are dominated by birch and aspen stands. Wildflowers begin to show in early spring with the marsh marigold, wood anemone, and violet. In summer, look for the rose, thimbleberry, moccasin flower, coral root, clintonia, wild sarsaparilla, and fireweed. Asters and goldenrod add to the fiery colors of autumn.

Come for the quiet, the solitude, and the famous Devil’s Kettle waterfall. The most popular hike leads from the trailhead upstream along the Brule River to Devil’s Kettle, where the river splits around a mass of volcanic rock. Half of the river plunges 50 feet into a pool, while the rest pours into a huge pothole. Anglers can catch brook and rainbow trout in the Brule River or its tributary, Gauthier Creek. The park offers camping, picnicking and hiking.

Hiking Trails
Summer – Hiking – 9 Miles
Winter – No Groomed Snowshoe Trails

Facilites: Showers – Wheelchair accessible, Flush Toilets- Wheelchair accessible, Vault Toilets – Throughout Park

History of Judge Magney State Park
Concrete foundations in the campground and picnic areas of the park are remnants of a transient work camp built there in 1934 by the State. The camp provided work and lodging for men displaced during the Depression years. In addition to building trails, logging, and completing public service projects, these men helped fight a fire in 1935 that burned more than 10,000 acres in the area. Later the men set up a sawmill and began to salvage fire-damaged wood. In 1957, a 940-acre parcel of forest along the Brule River was set aside as Brule River State Park. The park became Judge C. R. Magney State Park in 1963 when the Minnesota legislature selected this park as a memorial to the late Judge Magney, a lawyer, mayor of Duluth, justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and a strong advocate of Minnesota State Parks, especially those along the North Shore. With his influence, he was instrumental in establishing 11 state parks and waysides along Lake Superior. Over the years, parcels of land have been added to the park which today totals 4,642 acres.

Seasonal Use
This park is open year-round for day use. However, the campground closes and no services are available in winter. This park is minimally staffed during the winter months so the parking area and entrance road may not be plowed immediately following a snow event. Get additional seasonal information. here or contact Cascade River State Park for more information.

We will definitely be back!

Can’t wait for our next trip! We will definitely stay here again!

Summer means kayaking. And canoeing. And paddle boarding. And fishing. And hiking. And camping. It doesn’t last long here on the North Shore, so we savor every moment of it. And our favorite weekend of the entire summer? Well that would be the North Shore Water Festival. It starts out with the 2019 Paddling Film Festival World Tour and a bonfire on the beach on Friday, July 19th. Follow that up with two full days (July 20th-21st) of free Kayak, SUP, and Canoe Demos. And free SUP yoga. And a book signing with author Cary J. Griffith. You should be here for the whole weekend! Get all the details here.
