North Shore Oberg Mountain Hike

North Shore Oberg Mountain Hike

You will find the Oberg Mountain trail beautiful year round, but it’s especially gorgeous in the fall, when the surrounding forest is aglow with shades of gold, orange and red. There is no shortage of spectacular views on this 2.3-mile loop, including 360s of the Lake Superior North Shore, surrouding forest, and Oberg Lake. Generally considered a moderately challenging hike, allow 1-1/2 hours to complete. This is a very popular hiking trail, so you are likely encounter others. Dogs are welcome, but be sure to keep them on a leash. There are steep cliffs at the top so use caution with small children. Listen for black throated blue warblers in the spring, and look for beaver activity in Oberg Lake. The maples here are a distinct ecosystem, and harbor a variety of plants not common on the rest of the forest. This trail is a spur trail off of the Superior Hiking Trail.

The trail was a big loop that brought us back to the parking lot when we completed it. There were multiple scenic overlooks that provided beautiful views of the trees and water below us. Feel the wind in your face as you glide acros the water on your Grand Marais Hjordis Schooner Outing. The Hjørdis is a 1978 gaff-rigged schooner that bears the name of a Norwegian goddess. The schooner was used as a houseboat for 12 years in the Bahamas prior to its arrival in Lake Superior. In recent years it became part of the Lake Superior Education Program, which operates within the North House Folk School in Grand Marais.

LOCATION: On the Harbor 500 W Hwy 61, Grand Marais, MN 55604
| (218) 387-9762 | Website • 0.4 mi From Hotel

Originally, people sailed Lake Superior for utilitarian reasons: fishing and transportation. The Hjørdis is similar to the schooners used by the Scandinavians who settled this region but it sports some modern safety features and claims a completely different mission. The Lake Superior Education Program often works with organized groups but 80% of the participants in its Freshwater Studies Sail inquire individually at the dock in Grand Marais.

The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Take a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner and gain access to both the largest lake in the world and experience Grand Marais as it was approached in the centuries before Highway 61 — from the water.

Reservations: You can BOOK YOUR RESERVATION ONLINE up to one hour before the scheduled sail. Beyond that, call North House for availability. Per Coast Guard regulations, we can accommodate up to 6 guests per sail. Regardless of age, each passenger counts towards our 6 guest limit, and therefore must be registered. All youth up through age 15 must be accompanied by an adult. As the boat cannot simply return to shore upon request, North House recommends serious consideration before deciding to bring youth ages 0-5 aboard.

Each sail requires a minimum of 3 guests. If the minimum number of guests is not met, the captain may cancel that sail. Alternatively, if two passengers are registered and arrive to find that the minimum number of guests has not been met, they may “float the boat” by paying an additional $10 each which will allow the sail to happen.

Booking & Cancellation Policy
A credit card is required to hold your reservation but will not be charged until the sail. If you cancel your booking more than 48 hours in advance, you will not be charged. If you cancel fewer than 48 hours in advance or do not show up for your sail, your card will be charged the full amount.

More Reservations Detail

Our captains reserve the right to cancel a sail due to weather, equipment failure, or failure to meet the minimum number of guests. If we do cancel a sail, your card will not be charged. We will do our best to notify you ahead of time that your sail is cancelled by phone and email. If you do not get a call from us, assume that your sail is going ahead as scheduled.

Check-in and What to Bring

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your sail is scheduled to depart. Check in at the Yellow Building (School Store).
  • Please dress warmly. Out on the lake, the temperature is often at least 10 degrees cooler than on land. Dress in layers and bring a jacket. Sunglasses, a winter hat, mittens, and scarf are recommended.
  • You are welcome to bring snacks or beverages along. Water is a great idea.
  • If you are bringing a young person who weighs less than 50 lbs, you will need to provide your own PFD.
  • Dogs do not make good crew members, and are therefore not allowed on the schooner.

Sailing on the Hjørdis

The folk school is the departure for an incredible 2 hour sail in Lake Superior in the area near Grand Marais. Captain Matthew and deck hand Mark provided a friendly, entertaining, and relaxing sail on Lake Superior. Beautiful weather, the incredible setting of Lake Superior and the Superior National Forest provided us an incredible experience that we will do again in our next trip to Grand Marsis. Matthew and Mark had lots of interesting commentary through the cruise about sailing, the Grand Marais area, and other great spots to visit in Northern Minnesota. – Minnesota TripAdvisor Review

We will definitely be back!

We LOVED the town of Grand Marais. This hotel was the perfect location to walk anywhere in the town. It was so convenient to just walk to restaurants, shopping and the beach. The view from the room was fantastic and unexpected. The room had a little patio that overlooked the lake. It was very clean and had a nice tile shower with a double shower head. So much nicer than what I expected. They also had a very nice fitness room, which I didn’t use since the weather was great and we got lots of exercise outdoors. But this would be great in the winter or inclement weather. There was a free breakfast which was nice. They kept it clean and well maintained, which I noticed and appreciated. Can’t wait for our next trip! We will definitely stay here again!

Grand Marais Artist’s Point

Artist’s Point in Grand Marais is something you don’t want to miss. It provides access to the shoreline along a narrow path of concrete. Following it, you’ll find tide pools and rocky shores that take your breath away. You can take the path all the way to the lighthouse. Or head the other direction and visit the pine tree covered “island”. Make sure you have sturdy, comfortable shoes and a good hand on your kids because this is all at your own risk. This location is a favorite for sunsets, storm and great shoreline photographs. And, as its name suggests, you never know when you’ll spot artists at work.

Artist’s Point was formed from eruptions 1.1 billion years ago, the dark gray basalt that makes up the point appears to undulate in many places and is hexagonal fractured where it meets the lake – with picturesque results. The rock patterns and silhouettes combine with the fantastically vivid water colors making the point a breathtakingly beautiful spot. Incredibly some of the fractures split the rock below the water line into narrow inlets barely ten feet wide.

It’s a fantastic vantage point for the Grand Marais harbor, and looking back on land to the Sawtooth Mountains. Don’t just walk out and back. Take your time; watch the waves roll in and watch the sail boats come in and out of the harbor. Artist’s Point is a great place to end your day with amazing sunset pictures.

#1 thing to do in Grand Marais

This should be at the top of your list for things to see in Grand Marais. So relaxing and peaceful! No food or drinks by there that you can purchase, restaurants near by. Clean: yes clean area. Different: Some place you never seen before!!!! Seating: no benches to sit on. Wait time: No wait time. Anyone can come and walk around. Length of time spent here: 1/2 hour to 1 hour. Perfect time of day to go: Anytime during the day when it’s not raining. For kids, couples: Not recommended for young kids, unless adult supervision is right next to them. Some areas of walking are VERY narrow and NO guard rails to hold on to. Water is on both sides you could fall into. WATCH your step at all times. Ground can be uneven at certain spots. Easy walking. A few steps here and there, mostly flat. – Kim H Minneapolis TripAdvisor Review

Things to Do in Grand Marais Minnesota

Lake Superior lives up to its name in more ways than one. This is the largest freshwater lake on earth, and it is the deepest, coldest, and purest of all the Great Lakes. As a result, its waters produce a quality of fishing that some might say is, well, superior. The key to fishing Lake Superior is finding the fish: most of the lake appears empty, but once you find the fish, there are lots of them. This Grand Marais Fishing Charters Guide will help you find local guided fishing services for any type Lake Superior (and inland) fishing experience you are looking for.

Grand Marais Lake Superior fishing charters run out of the Grand Marais Harbor. For hardy anglers, the cold, deep waters of the lake offer year-round angling opportunity. With a little help from a local guide, you can make the most of this fishery no matter the season.

Spring: Ice-off marks the start of Lake Superior’s open water fishing season, usually in mid-to-late April. By May, you can expect most charter boats around the lake to be up and running just in time for Chinook (King) and Coho Salmon fishing. Depending on where you fish, you’ll also find good numbers of Walleye, Muskellunge, and Northern Pike at this time of year.

Summer: Early Summer marks the height of Lake Superior Salmon fishing. You can expect good numbers of King and Coho Salmon through June, depending on where you fish. Anglers in Minnesota don’t see as much Salmon as others, but the local Trout fishing makes up for it. You’ll find high numbers of Lake and Brown Trout throughout the lake from July through fal`

Fall: September is your last chance to experience the best of Lake Superior’s Salmon season. At this time of year, the key is knowing where to look. By the end of September, many charter boats shut down for the season.

Winter: Come December, much of the lake is covered in thick ice. But that’s not enough to scare away local anglers! Many continue fishing Lake Superior all through winter, using an entirely different approach: ice fishing. Dettermined anglers pack ice augers, huts, heaters, and the rest of their gear onto vehicles and haul them off to the fishing grounds. Main target species in winter include Splake, Walleye, Pike, and Perch. In some places, anglers also catch Steelhead, Trout, Whitefish, and even the odd Salmon while ice fishing.

Grand Marais Fishing FAQ

? What to expect: Charter fishing on Lake Superior offers spectacular scenery paired with a world-class fishing experience. Plan on either a half-day or full-day adventure typically starting early in the morning.

? What to bring: Dress warm and bring layers!!! It is generally AT LEAST 15 degrees cooler out on Lake Superior at any time. Even on warm August days you may find yourself wishing for a sweater. Most guides will provide all the gear you’ll need but your camera. Check with your guide service on specifics.

? Type of fish: Kamloops rainbow trout, pink salmon, Chinook salmon, or steelhead trout thrive in the cold, rocky waters just off the shoreline. Lake trout begin to bite early in the spring, and good fishing continues into the fall. Coho and Chinook salmon are also caught beginning in late summer, usually by trolling within a few miles of shore.

? License type: Anyone age 16+ must have a MN Fishing License with a trout stamp. License year begins March 1 and ends the last day of February (except where otherwise noted).

? Claims to fame: Some of the record fish in the state were caught right here in Cook County MN. Here are our top fish submitted to the MN DNR State Fishing Records: Chinook/King Salmon, Pink Salmon, Rainbow/Steelhead Trout, Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Whitefish, and Walleye.

? Not all species are legal to fish for year-round: Closures vary by state and can change from year to year, so be sure to read more about local regulations before your trip.

Services: Inland guided fishing, Guided fishing in and near the BWCA on mid-Gunflint Trail lakes for walleyes, smallmouth bass, bluegills, rainbow trout, splake trout, lake trout, and brook trout.

In the last few years, Vince has discovered a lake that does well on two to five pound lake trout all summer. Brook trout are only found in relatively difficult to get to lakes and tend to bite best in the spring and fall. Rainbow trout and splake are aggressive all summer and they are the trout that I fish for the most. Ice fishing is a blast; you can catch rainbow, splake, brook, and lake trout when you visit me in the winter! I firmly believe that I am the only guide on the Gunflint Trail guiding for stream trout in lakes.

You can also fish for walleyes, smallmouth bass, and, occasionally, bluegills. Although he has caught a lot of trophy-sized fish over the years, his my primary focus is to put people on large numbers of eating sized fish (most clients take fish home) and occasionally someone still catches a trophy.

Prices include everything needed for trip except MN fishing license, lunch, drinks, and bait. Bait can be provided by guide; customer will be charged for what is used. Shore lunches can be arranged for in advance (not available during fire bans). Customer will purchase own fishing license and bring own drinks.

An experience of a lifetime!

It’s been 30 yrs since I have been fishing on big waters and I will admit I was a little nervous. Tom was the best guide ever he was extremely patient and informative. I was totally impressed with the fact that within minutes we were fishing! I have to mention the boat too, just beautiful and extremely pristine! Thank you Tom and I will be talking about this trip for years to come and I will highly recommend Big Lake Charters to everyone! We WILL be back very soon! – Cissy N Tripadvisor Review

Getting to the trailhead: The trailhead for the Honeymoon Bluff trail is just off of Co 66 (Clearwater Rd) which is 30 miles up the Gunflint Trail. From Grand Marais, turn north on the Gunflint Trail (Co Rd 12) and go about 27 miles until you reach Co 66. Turn right and continue for 3.25 miles to reach the small parking lot off the left side of the road. The parking lot is right after you go past the turn off for the Flour Lake Campground.

The hike: The hike is a very short loop, but is relatively steep for the first half. There is a stairway climb for the first part of the hike until you reach the T of the loop. Continue right until you reach the overlook area. There are a number of great locations along this overlook to capture some nice sunset shots (all facing west)! The overlook provides spectacular views of two lakes surrounded by boreal forest.

100% Worth the Drive!

We were on the fence about going, because our GPS said it was a 52 minute drive. The drive only took us about 40, and was worth every second! The hike was incredibly easy, just a short flight of stairs and a very small and flat loop with an incredible overlook. I’ve been on ‘off the beaten path’ hiking trails before that were near impossible to find, so I was incredibly relieved that this was actually very easy to locate; it has a big sign and everything. Just be prepared for about 15 minutes of narrow gravel road driving! Shelby C, Minneapolis TripAdvisor Review

Pincushion Mountain Trail to Grand Marais
Pincushion Mountain provides a spectacular view down the mountain to the town of Grand Marias and its harbor and lighthouse. Picnic tables and hiking trails make this a great stop for lunch on the way up the Gunflint Trail. Mountain Biking: There are about 6 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails starting from the trailhead at Pincushion. Hikers may be found on these trails, so be watchful for them. The trail intersects the Pincushion XC ski trail system. In dry conditions, some ski trails may be used by bikes, but they are not designed for bicycles. If you see that the ski trail surface is too soft and you might cause erosion, please use only the bike trails. Also, be aware that the mountain bike trail maps do not show the entire ski trail system, and it is very easy to lose your way on the ski trails.

The Pincushion Mountain Singletrack Mountain Bike Trails begin from this trailhead.
Pincushion Mountain Trail System Webpage • 3.1 miles from Superior Inn Grand Marais

Day Hiking: Hikers at Pincushion may use either the XC ski trails or mountain bike trails. If you are hiking the bike trails, keep alert for cyclists and yield the trail to them when you meet. If you are using the XC ski trail system, note that it is complex and it is easy to turned around.

Superior National Forest Scenic Byway
The Superior National Forest Scenic Byway, designated as Forest Highway 11, runs from the taconite town of Silver Bay to the logging town of Aurora. There are long stretches of unbroken forest along this 54 mile road, giving the driver a good sense of being away from it all. Several trails and campgrounds are on or near the route for perfect resting areas.

Route Description
The byway begins in Gilbert, at the intersection of State Highway 37 and Sparta Road. The route follows Highway 37 to State Highway 135, continuing eastward along the latter through Biwabik and then to Aurora, where it leaves Highway 135 and follows St. Louis County Road 100 to the center of town. From there it turns south until the city border, and then resumes its eastward travel along County Road 110 to Hoyt Lakes. From Hoyt Lakes the road gradually arcs southward. This portion is also called Skibo Lookout Road, after the Skibo Vista Scenic Overlook, which overlooks the Laurentian Divide. County Road 110 ends at its junction with County Road 16 (Town Line Road), and the byway route again continues east, through the unincorporated towns of Fairbanks and Basset. Crossing the St. Louis-Lake county line, the roadway becomes Lake County Road 15 and passes through Toimi. This is the longest portion of the route, traveling 23 miles to Lax Lake Road, where it turns south along County Road 4 for approximately 2 miles. It then travels east along County Road 5 into Silver Bay, ending at Highway 61 near the North Shore.

Judge Magney State Park & Devil’s Kettle Waterfall

In 1957, a 940-acre section of forest along the Brule River was set aside as Brule River State Park. The park became Judge C. R. Magney State Park in 1963 when the Minnesota legislature selected this park as a memorial to the late Judge Magney, a lawyer, mayor, justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and a strong proponent of Minnesota State Parks, especially those along the North Shore. Judge Magney was instrumental in establishing 11 state parks and waysides along Lake Superior.

The scenic Brule River races through the park, forming whitewater rapids and waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. Along the lower stretches of the river are a series of spectacular waterfalls. Birdwatchers will find a bonanza of warblers during the nesting months of May, June, and July. Early fall is a good time to observe migrating hawks as they congregate along the shore of Lake Superior. Large white spruce grace the campground and other upland areas. The forested areas are dominated by birch and aspen stands. Wildflowers begin to show in early spring with the marsh marigold, wood anemone, and violet. In summer, look for the rose, thimbleberry, moccasin flower, coral root, clintonia, wild sarsaparilla, and fireweed. Asters and goldenrod add to the fiery colors of autumn.

Come for the quiet, the solitude, and the famous Devil’s Kettle waterfall. The most popular hike leads from the trailhead upstream along the Brule River to Devil’s Kettle, where the river splits around a mass of volcanic rock. Half of the river plunges 50 feet into a pool, while the rest pours into a huge pothole. Anglers can catch brook and rainbow trout in the Brule River or its tributary, Gauthier Creek. The park offers camping, picnicking and hiking.

Winter – No Groomed Snowshoe Trails

History of Judge Magney State Park
Concrete foundations in the campground and picnic areas of the park are remnants of a transient work camp built there in 1934 by the State. The camp provided work and lodging for men displaced during the Depression years. In addition to building trails, logging, and completing public service projects, these men helped fight a fire in 1935 that burned more than 10,000 acres in the area. Later the men set up a sawmill and began to salvage fire-damaged wood. In 1957, a 940-acre parcel of forest along the Brule River was set aside as Brule River State Park. The park became Judge C. R. Magney State Park in 1963 when the Minnesota legislature selected this park as a memorial to the late Judge Magney, a lawyer, mayor of Duluth, justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and a strong advocate of Minnesota State Parks, especially those along the North Shore. With his influence, he was instrumental in establishing 11 state parks and waysides along Lake Superior. Over the years, parcels of land have been added to the park which today totals 4,642 acres.

Seasonal Use
This park is open year-round for day use. However, the campground closes and no services are available in winter. This park is minimally staffed during the winter months so the parking area and entrance road may not be plowed immediately following a snow event. Get additional seasonal information. here or contact Cascade River State Park for more information.

Renowned architect Jeffrey Brauer (Giants Ridge and Wilderness at Fortune Bay) refined the River and Canyon 18 to live up to Golf Digest’s rating of Superior National as one of Minnesota’s “Best Places to Play.” New features include Ohio’s Best white sand, five sets of tees, playable roughs, wider fairways and larger greens.

27 Holes of Resort Golf, Open to the Pubic
Superior National is a public golf course offering 27 holes of spectacular resort golf. Unbelievable vistas of Lake Superior and other natural features can be seen as you play around the course. The River and Canyon nines make up newly renovated “Premier 18.” The Mountain 9 is our 9-hole course ideal for an emergency 9 or a game of FootGolf. Perfect for scratch players, beginners, and everyone in between, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come play a round or two!

The River & Canyon 18 – the new Premier 18

River 9
This is the front 9 of our newly renovated Premier 18. This par 35 features five sets of tees, and is the easier of the nines to start with. As the Poplar River cuts through, it comes into play on a few of the holes, making for a challenging, natural obstacle. This course is also marked by elevation changes – uphill on holes 2 – 5, downhill on 6-8, and back uphill on 9.

Canyon 9
The back 9 of the newly renovated Primer 18. Because of the dramatic valley-like terrain, some may refer to this course as “target golf.” You’ll want to select the right club off the tee to overcome challenges like ravine ponds, the Poplar River, and narrow fairways. The par-36 has five sets of tees, is surrounded by forest, and shows off great views of Lake Superior.

Silver Bay Municipal Golf Course • 58.5 miles

LOCATION: 19 Golf Course Road, Silver Bay, MN 55614, (218) 226-3111

The Golf Course, which opened to the public in 1983, is now owned by the City of Silver Bay, and remains a public facility. The golf course is a very well maintained, regulation par 36 that measures 3,173 from the back tees. Surrounded by heavily forested hills, and laid out across the east branch of the Beaver River, the golf course offers both natural beauty as well as a fair challenge to the golfers that visit. >Silver Bay Municipal Golf Course website
